This call addresses projects in Central and South Eastern Europe that share PATTERNS' areas of interest. We support research, publications, as well as artistic and cultural projects and initiatives. PATTERNS aims to document, analyse and investigate different aspects of and practices related to the transformation of daily life and culture in Central and South Eastern Europe, while accounting for the pluralities that describe the region. PATTERNS seeks to promote understanding and knowledge of a differently lived past, which can facilitate a shared present and future. In doing so, it takes on the role of a “contemporary witness”. The initiative focuses on the 1960s and 1970s, as well as on the “transition” period leading up to the present. The period commonly known as the "transition" is, without question, an important historical turning point, not only in the sense of reshaping and redefining what art and culture could mean in a post-totalitarian society: At historical and geographical fault lines, stories and historical documents emerge. Hermann Graf von Pückler-Muskau Die Region Lausitz-Spreewald liegt im Süden des Landes Brandenburg. Sie ist geprägt von gravierenden demographischen Veränderung. Cottbus als Oberzentrum ist besonders davon betroffen. Grundlegende Fragen an die städtebauliche Entwicklung sind hier zu lösen. In Cottbus hatte die Abwanderung von Wohnbevölkerung und die wirtschaftlichen Transformationen Leerstand zur Folge. Das betrifft nicht nur die sprichwörtliche Platte, die etwa drei Viertel der Stadtfläche einnimmt und einen Stadtumbau erfahren muss. Besonders betroffen ist auch die Kernstadt mit der mittelalterlichen Stadt und deren Ränder, die das engere Wettbewerbsgebiet bilden. Durch den Abriss ist Cottbus eine lückige Stadt geworden. Vor dem Hintergrund der offenen Zukunftsfragen soll deshalb ein Beitrag zur Stabilisierung und Weiterentwicklung der Kernstadt und ihres Umfeldes geleistet werden. Auffallend schön sind alte Tuchfabriken aus Backstein in guter Lage am Wasser gelegen. Sie bieten möglicherweise Standorte für neue Perspektiven und die Chance, alte Bewohner an ihre Stadt zu binden und vielleicht sogar neue Wirtschaftszweige und damit auch neue Bewohner anzuziehen. Fürst Pücklers Ausspruch für die heutige Zeit interpretiert ermutigt dazu, ein städtisches Gerüst herauszubilden, eine Typologie, in der anspruchsvolle individuelle Architektur möglich wird. The aim of the residency, first organised in 2006, is to put on an exhibition at La Galerie within the context of a French art centre, and to meet artists and professionals working in the contemporary art field in France. Freiburg Thema Gottesraum Die Erzdiözese Freiburg schreibt erstmalig für das Jahr 2008 einen Kunstpreis in der Sparte „Bildende Kunst“ (nicht Architektur) zum Thema Gottesraum aus. Gott ist nach christlicher Auffassung an sich weder räumlich noch zeitlich. Doch er wirkt in Raum und Zeit. Diese Präsenz Gottes ist in Worten kaum beschreibbar. Gleichwohl hat die Kunst zu allen Zeiten versucht, Gottes Wirken ins „Bild“ zu bringen – dies mit Bezug auf die Aussage des Apostels Paulus, Christus ist das „Bild des unsichtbaren Gottes“ (Kol 1,15). Künstlerinnen und Künstler sind eingeladen, sich mit der Gottesfrage und -präsenz in unserer Zeit auseinander zu setzen und in bildnerischer Weise zum Ausdruck zu bringen, wie Gott heute in unserer Welt und Gesellschaft „Raum“ greift, welche „Orte“ wir dem Wirken Gottes zuweisen und wie das Heilige raum-zeitlich „fassbar“ ist. Die Formulierung Gottes-raum spielt dabei bewusst mit der Spannung von sakral und profan und thematisiert die Grenzhaftigkeit der Begegnung von Göttlichem und Weltlichem. Der Preis ist mit einem Preisgeld von 5000.- € dotiert. Die Preisverleihung wird mit einer Ausstellung im Regierungspräsidium Karlsruhe im September/Oktober 2008 und einer Ausstellung im Morat-Institut Freiburg im Dezember/Januar 2008/09 verbunden. ... PROJECTS CYBERSPACE AS UNIVERSAL MEETING PLACE 3000 euro per chosen project Laboral, Art and Industrial Creation Centre, a new creative space located in Gijón, Principality of Asturias, Spain, is making an open invitation for projects for its upcoming LABCYBERSPACES exhibition, part of its inaugural programme. The goal of the invitation is to foster an open reflection on the connections between art, technology and industry, and to then materialise this reflection in the LABCYBERSPACES exhibition scheduled for spring 2007. The selection will feature 10 projects effectively addressing the technological nature of the artwork in its most open conception, with a special focus on all those engaging in the notion of CYBERSPACE as a universal meeting point. Given that the goal is to encourage a common and open reflection, we have chosen the format of an open invitation to guarantee the widest possible participation.
