Mario Asef

Mario Asef's public interventions, photographs, videos, soundscapes and installations focus on the legibility of urban space and architecture into a specific social- cultural context within a historical moment.
Hopping to find a way to explore an intimate social-critical and political aspect of forms, the artist develop a system of telling, in the sense of a thought experiment that aims to produce an unpredictable effect - a moment of logical absurdity-creating a fiction of the real. He is a precise and yet poetic recorder of the fleeting and the mundane. His work emphasise, in an unpretentious and yet precise way, moments of displacement and the disappearance of space and time. In a subversive and humorous way, Mario Asef manages to breach the rules of the every day life. Like a researcher he explores, with the most different mediums, the construct of public spaces and public life.

Confusion in the Garden

For this soundinstallation, four mini-speakers are been installed on four street-lamps in the Lundagård Park in Lund. They played back the biblical tale of Babel spoken by 27 foreigners in 22 different languages. The idea is to make the problem of global cultural integration a central theme and to analyse the ideology of a universal language (lingua franca) as a form of harmonic conviviation.

A compilation of information, pictures and comments refering to this topic were placed in a gallery room as a wall-paper combined with a special version of the sound installation in the park.
Die Repräsentation als Wirklichkeit

„Die Repräsentation als Wirklichkeit“ takes the abstract mathematical space as its starting point in order to approach the reality of the exhibition space. In mathematics, space is a quantity described by a certain structure. However, there is no definition for „space„ that is valid in all fields of mathematics. The term has different meanings in different mathematical sub-categories, each standing for single aspects of our perception of space. The space experienced on a daily basis is the so-called 3-dimensional Euclidean space. In the exhibition „Die Repräsentation als Wirklichkeit“, Mario Asef investigates the relationship of the mathematically imagined space and the real experienced space.
The Mystery and The Wonder

The Mystery and the Wonder almost follows the lead of visualising a long lost space. By presenting the Zenon paradox of the ancient hero Achilles and the turtle, Asef re-narrates the disappearance of the city of Byzantium. The paradox describes a race between the two, which end in the infinity of algebraic analysis. This textual work is confronted with the legend of the history of the palace Dolmabahce - a building formed from the immaterial, whose factoring was based on the Sultans order to print more money, because the financial capacity of the city has already been exhausted.
